THE CAUSE

“In the end, you have to measure your life by whether children have a better future. Our children are depending on us.” – President Bill Clinton

In the last 30 years, childhood obesity has almost tripled in children and adolescents. Today about one in three children in the United States is overweight or obese, putting them at risk for serious health problems today and well into their futures. There is no single cause of childhood obesity and therefore no single solution. By transforming all the environments where kids learn and grow, we can give them the best chance to live their healthiest lives.

100% of funds donated here go directly to programs supporting children’s health. Our sponsors have generously covered the expedition budget for BEYOND 7/2.

On May 27, 2016 pro endurance athlete Colin O’Brady completed the Explorers Grand Slam in a world record shattering 139 days. Colin climbed the Seven Summits and skied the last degree to the North and South Poles, all in an effort to raise awareness and funds to inspire active, healthy kids in partnership with the Alliance for a Healthier Generation.
  • That feeling when you climb “Everest” in Stratton, Vermont. The @29029_everesting didn’t disappoint. It was a 15:30 hour journey through the night. Each lap was 1750 vertical feet and 1.3 Miles. It pitched up to a muddy 40% grade, and after 17 laps added up to 29,029ft; the attitude on Mt. Everest’s summit from sea level. No snow, ice, or thin air, like the Himalaya but it was a seriously formidable challenge nonetheless. Most important it was incredible to participate in an event with so many amazing people. The camaraderie and community have been top notch. Huge shoutout to @marchodulich @the100mileman and all many others that brought this unforgettable experience to life. It’s been an honor and privileged to share this journey with you. “One step at a time...” #29029

Today I just arrived to Vermont for a different kind of “Everesting” challenge the @29029_everesting ... we won’t need the oxygen mask here, but we will be climbing 29,029ft this weekend. 17 laps up Stratton Ski mountain with @the100mileman and gang. Each lap 1700ft, 1.3 Miles...rinse and repeat 17 times to equal the same vertical gain at Everest. It all kicks off tomorrow...be sure to tune into the IG live updates. I’m excited to tackle this challenge with a great group of people.

  • #TBT Throwback to the moment I crested the Geneva Spur on Mt. Everest and stepped into the Death Zone (Above 26,000ft) for the first time in my life. Despite the stunning view when this photo was taken, little did I know a huge wind storm was about to blow in, and I would spend the next 18 hours suffering through one of the longest nights of my life in a tent at Camp 4, and abandoning my first attempt to summit the tallest mountain in the world. If at first your don't succeed....

  • Panoramic views from this mornings climb. I've been doing laps on Mt. Hood the past week to get some vertical in my legs in preparation for @29029_everesting challenge in two weeks. I've had the mountain literally all to myself. I haven't run in to a single other person up here. The solitude means extra work breaking trail in deep snow, but there is something magical about being up here all alone. No matter how many times I climb this mountain, the beauty and variety of routes never gets old. I grew up in the shadow of this mountain, so it will always be a special place for me. .

  • I was all alone watching the sunrise on the summit of Mt. Hood at 6am yesterday. There is nothing like solitude on a mountaintop to put life into perspective. Makes me feel small, yet alive and grateful for all of the adventures to be had out there. Each sunrise is a gift of a new day. .

  • 31.5 Miles today on the trail completing the full point to point of the famous Wildwood trail. I've spent a lot of time training on this trail over the years having grown up near it, but I've never done the whole thing in one go. This pic is from a trail run last year out there, but today was more of a intentional zone 1 power hike as I prepare for the @29029_everesting . Total time today 7 hours 15 minutes continuous with no breaks. My summer has been amazing, but the travel schedule has left my training VERY inconsistent. It dawned on me that I'm only three weeks out from the "Everesting" challenge and not feeling very fit. Happy to see that I could still put together a 31 mile day on the trails despite the inconsistency. Good times indeed! Might be a little sore tomorrow ... 😬

  • #TBT Throwback Thursday to when I trekked to the North Pole. That expedition is a good metaphor for success in life. When it's -40 degrees outside and you are dragging a 150 pound sled across one of the harshest environments in the world you have no choice but to keep pushing forward one step at a time. Eventually that grit and perseverance leads to the "Top of the World" (Quite Literally). #NeverQuit #KeepMovingForward .

  • I've got Antarctica on my mind this week. I took this shot from
Camp 1 on Mt. Vinson, Antarctica's tallest mountain. I am still blown away by the pristine beauty of the frozen continent. So many untouched places left to explore. #Antarctica #vinson #MtVinson #SouthPole

  • Despite the -40 degree temperatures at the South Pole, I could help but jump for joy when I arrived after pulling my 150lb sled across the last degree of latitude to reach the bottom of the world. Maybe I'll be back soon? #SouthPole #Antarctica #BottomOfTheWorld

THE CHARITY

The Alliance for a Healthier Generation is a catalyst for children’s health. Founded by the American Heart Association and the Clinton Foundation in 2005, the Alliance has been climbing its own mountain, in an effort to make the healthy choice the easy choice for kids across the country.

The Alliance’s current work directly impacts more than 20 million children, with a focus on low-income and minority populations who are at increased risk for obesity and other diseases. Millions more young people benefit from system changes initiated in partnership with the Alliance and the corporate sector.

“I’m not in this alone – I have a team to lean against. The Alliance for a Healthier Generation keeps me grounded. The support they provide me and the ideas they hand out – they remind me that I am doing something good.” – May Phyo, 16-year-old Alliance Youth Ambassador

We’re all in this together. True change comes when individuals, groups, and systems work together to create healthier environments in all the place kids spend their time. These systems and environments are the schools, communities, businesses and homes that our kids live in, learn at and encounter every day. Whoever you are and wherever you are, you have a part to play in giving kids the chance to learn healthy habits that will last a lifetime.

“As a world-class athlete, Colin is a great example of what is possible when someone makes health a top priority. More importantly, as someone who is using his gifts to create a better world for our next generation, Colin is a perfect example of what is possible when we all work together – a brighter world for our nation’s children. Thank you Colin and thank you to all those you inspire to join the cause.” – Howell Wechsler, Alliance for a Healthier Generation CEO
